- What state has the largest blacktail deer

Feb 17,  · While Washington may claim the world-record blacktail, Oregon’s recent record-book contributions are just as impressive, taken from the Willamette Valley, south through the . The World's Record non-typical Columbia blacktail deer rack hung on a hunter's garage for several years before someone suggested it should be measured by the Boone & Crockett . On a dank October morning in , Lester H. Miller found himself face-to-face with an extraordinary Columbia blacktail deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus). He'd waited for Missing: state.

I really wanted to watch the boys make a stalk. Luke got my attention and snapped me out of my indecisive trance. The herd divided as a few bucks went up the ridge, while two dropped down the ridge toward a saddle. Luke and I used the contour of some draws to get closer.

The big buck was not in either of the groups that were moving off. There was only one very small draw left. Did he somehow sneak out on us? We crawled to within 10 yards of the lip of the draw.

I decided to be patient and wait. If he was in the draw, there was no way for him to leave it without showing himself inside my bow range, and I felt it was risky to try to peek down into the draw. We waited several minutes, and I began to lose hope. Both visible groups of bucks were moving away more quickly now.

I looked back at Jake who was glassing my position from our original spot. He gave me an encouraging gesture. Suddenly, a small buck fed out of the draw 14 yards in front of us. He saw us and started to stiff-leggedly walk the rim of the draw. I knew it was likely that the big buck would follow him out. My muscles tensed with my release hooked on the string. I settled my bow grip into that familiar place on my left palm. This was going to happen fast, and I was way closer than I wanted to be.

Within moments the big buck slumbered out of the draw with his nose in the grass feeding. As I came to full draw, he saw the movement and looked my way. However, his reaction was too late and my arrow smashed through his ribs from 14 yards. He sprinted down the ridge and bailed into some timber where I would find him an hour later. The blacktail was later scored by a panel of Pope and Young measurers. I thought back on the three-year journey and on the nearly 30 years of dreaming of this adventure.

I thought of the hundreds of bucks I had looked over and the time spent bonding with my son and of his promise to stick with me to the end. Our journey made a complete circle. The circles of human influence are an integral part to the magic of hunting. The way others inspire us and the way we inspire them are the fiber of what fuels our passion in the field.

Thank you, Chuck and Jack, for telling stories nearly 30 years ago. Without those, I would never have had a dream to chase. Thank you, Jake, for being with me and living that dream. Search Huntin' Fool. December The general archery season usually runs from the last week of August through the last week of September. Normally, I hunt mule deer in the desert of southeast Oregon, and then if I am unsuccessful, I hunt one of the areas that offers the late rut dates for Columbia blacktail on the western side of the state.

Two of the units I focus on in the late hunts are Rouge and Evans Creek. The late archery dates for those two units in were November December 2. The western general rifle season deer tag is valid in most units from the end of September until the beginning of November.

A big thing to remember about hunting Oregon for blacktail is that they live in thick, steep country. A lot of land on the west side is made up of either public land or large timber company properties. A lot of the timber company lands will allow access as long as the fire danger is not high. Some of them charge a fee, while others are free. There are a lot of gated roads to hike in on, but a good mountain bike can really help you cover country.

A good tactic is to glass clearcuts and burns. Blacktail are more like whitetail and can have a very small home range. Another tactic that is used in Oregon is baiting deer. Oregon, like Utah, allows a hunter to hunt over bait. This tactic has been responsible for a lot of big bucks hitting the ground. Hunters have the best luck baiting early in the season when the bucks are still in velvet.

They have the earliest season opening date in the West with the A zone opening in the middle of July and the rifle season opening in the middle of August. The B zone is hands down the best zone in the state for blacktail deer hunting. The archery season in the B zone typically opens in the middle of August, but area B4 opens at the end of July.

The rifle season opens in the middle of September, but area B4 opens earlier at the end of August. The B zone has a lot of public land and is very similar to the country in southeast Oregon. California offers plenty of good public land areas where if a hunter is willing to put in the time he should have an opportunity to harvest a buck.

California has some world-class blacktail hunting on a number of large private ranches in the northwest portion of the state. If you are lucky enough to get access, these can be very fun and easy hunts. If you are looking to add a blacktail to your trophy room and you need some help planning a hunt, give us a call.
