Following a short week due to hosting the Eastern Washington Eagles this past Sunday, the Florida Gators are diving back into their conference schedule, hosting the Missouri Tigers this Saturday for the first of six SEC games in a row. UF has lost its last six conference matchups dating back to the midway point of the season.
Will that streak come to an end on Saturday? Oddsmakers tend to think so. Florida is viewed as an point favorite over Missouri, according to the Sports Illustrated Sportsbook. Sure, Missouri just went toe to toe with the former No. But I'm not buying the hype. It felt much more like an off night for a typically dominant Bulldogs squad in a raucous Columbia, Mo. This isn't to say I view this game as an easy win for UF, as Georgia is clearly a better team than Florida, I just view Florida as a clearly better team than Missouri, at least in terms of all-around talent and specifically when it comes down to offensive firepower.
The ground game has shown it can roll with talented pieces like Nathaniel Peat. The theme? Mizzou has a lot of offensive talent, which makes the no-show against Kansas State all the more puzzling. That comes down to some play-calling errors and some crucial, untimely mistakes by some of these players. If the O-line can continue to take a step, Cook can continue to develop and this team can simply become more steady, there is a lot of potential for something special to take place on this side of the ball and the Tigers have already shown flashes of it.
Between the second quarter and the third quarter, Georiga drove into the red zone 3 consecutive times and was held to a field goal each time. Georgia scored TDs on just 2 of its 5 red-zone trips.
This unit is something to continue to keep an eye on after it has shown it can hang with the best of them and has consistently been a bright spot over the first 5 games of the season. Linebacker Chad Bailey was hurt during the first half of the week four matchup against Auburn and left that game with his arm in a harness.
Bailey practiced in a non-contact jersey on Tuesday, but Drinkwitz said that Bailey is doubtful. Dameon Wilson , who has taken over duties for Bailey in the MIKE calling the defense and getting players aligned has gotten the confidence of Baker, along with linebackers Devin Nicholson and Will Norris.
Cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine has made the transition from slot cornerback to the outside seem effortless this season. Unfortunately, Abrams-Draine also suffered an undisclosed injury in the fourth quarter against Georgia and is day-to-day. Dreyden Norwood replaced Abrams-Draine and had two tackles and allowed three receptions for 34 yards. Miami transfer Marcus Clarke joined the team before the week two matchup against Kansas State.
Baker said the two players will split the snaps if Abrams-Draine is not available on Saturday. He had a really good practice on Tuesday. Saturday's matinee won't be the first time Drinkwitz and Florida head coach Billy Napier face off. The two faced off twice during the season when both were head coaches in the Sun Belt Conference. Drinkwitz and the Mountaineers got the best of Napier and the Ragin' Cajuns on both occasions, first in week six with a road win and then again with a win in the Sun Belt Championship.
Ironically, the night after that game, Drinkwitz met with Mizzou officials and would take the head coaching job at Missouri soon after.
